Assoċjazzjoni Wirt il-Kalkara notes with satisfaction that during the last months preliminary restoration works at Fort Ricasoli have initiated. The works being done consist mainly of the discharge of waste and other material through the Government Cleansing and Maintenance Division, and the erection of scaffolding and eventual restoration on the structure known as casemated battery by the Restoration Directorate.
The Association has for the past two years insisting for a thorough restoration of Fort Ricasoli, which is heritage of national importance and the largest fort in Europe. This was also due to the fact that the deterioration is accelerating, advancing through natural elements. This initiative led to the need for restoration of this fort rising on the national agenda, especially through a report prepared by the Association which was presented to the Maltese authorities, including the Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Joseph Muscat and the Hon. Glenn Bedingfield on behalf of the Cottonera Foundation.
In a statement Assoċjazzjoni Wirt il-Kalkara would like to thank the Maltese Government on granting this request, especially the Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government Hon. Dr. Owen Bonnici, under whose portfolio falls this project. The Association looks forward towards a secondary process through which the fort structure outside the port, where damage is at its maximum, is safeguarded.
